Construction Blitz!
31 JULY 2002
July has been a great month up at Straw Hollow. The weather has been wonderful, the garden is coming on great... we're eating our own produce every day, and feeling like a million bucks.
Our old life, chained to our corporate desks, is a distant memory, and we're wondering why we didn't quit our jobs years ago.
There's just one problem... (more on that later...)
On the construction front, we've been quite busy, building the yurt and a deck connecting it to the Straw Bale Cabin.
The picture at left shows the yurt door and walls. If you've never heard of a yurt, well, don't feel too bad. It's basically the Mongolian adaptation of the North American Indian tipi. They're extraordinarily stable yet very portable structures. Easy to build, and we think it looks quite GROOVY.
The deck joins our two structures, and we're quite proud of how things are looking. Sure, it's no Taj Mahal, but here in Hooterville, we don't go in for such lavish structures.
We're not done yet, though. We're waiting for the rental centre to deliver our mortar mixer so that we can apply the final (colour) coat to the cabin walls.
Yup, I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love my veggie garden! Everything is coming along great, and as for the failures, well I just hope those slimy critters enjoyed our head lettuce and green peppers. We could have used some chemicals to destroy them, but it just doesn't seem to be the right thing to do...

On another subject, we made the big step, and put Straw Hollow up for sale this week. We've owned this wonderful property for three years, had some great times here, but feel that it's now time to move on with our lives. We've been formulating some business ideas these past few months, and plan to move out to the west coast to pursue those plans once Straw Hollow sells.
So that's what's going on here in Hooterville this month. Life is good in the "slow lane", and as we said at the top of the page, we sure don't miss corporate life... oh, except for our company dental plan.

YEAH, BABY!
Talk to you soon... Alain and Ian
